Ladies Just Want to Have Fun: Exploring Kariba

The year was 2022 a time when the Covid-19 catastrophe was slowly abating. We had spent the majority of our days indoors or engrossed in work, striving to adapt to the challenges of the Covid era and the new normal that had gradually emerged as our way of life.

“The Afronomads travel group happened to advertise a trip to Kariba, and without hesitation, I registered and paid for the journey. It was a much-needed detox that I couldn’t resist.

As the date approached, we eagerly prepared for our adventure and finally embarked on this much-anticipated journey to Kariba. The excitement and anticipation were palpable as we set out to explore this beautiful destination.”

We arrived in Kariba in the afternoon, and oh my, the views were truly breathtaking. It instantly brought back memories of Algeria. The landscape was reminiscent of a coastal setting, with mountains framed by the vast expanse of water. Although we were in Zimbabwe, the resemblance to an oceanic scene was striking. Kariba felt like the closest we could get to experiencing the beauty of an ocean in this landlocked country.

We checked into our room at Resta Lodge, our home for the weekend.

When Lake Kariba was constructed, it held the title of the largest dam wall and artificial lake in the world. Although this record has since been surpassed by other dams, it still retains its status as the world’s largest man-made reservoir by volume. This feat of engineering was completed in the late 1950s, with the dam’s construction creating the vast lake that we see today. Lake Kariba not only serves as a source of hydroelectric power but also as a vital water resource for the region, supporting local communities and wildlife.

Its creation transformed the landscape and ecosystem of the Zambezi River, making it a remarkable testament to human ingenuity and the harmonious coexistence of nature and development. This makes the Zambezi River home to two world wonders – the other being the largest waterfall in the world, the majestic Victoria Falls.”

Since Kariba is known for its abundance of fish, upon arrival, we enjoyed a delicious meal featuring fresh fish caught from the lake. The dish was prepared with local flavors and accompanied by traditional side dishes, offering us a taste of the region’s culinary delights.

After our satisfying meal, we took some time to relax and explore the surroundings as we geared up for our first activity of the day: parasailing. This was a new experience for me, and It was a mix of excitement and anxiety as I anticipated the adventure ahead. The thrill of soaring high above the sparkling waters of Lake Kariba was both exhilarating and nerve-wracking, creating a sense of anticipation for the unforgettable moments that awaited us.

We left the lodge as a group and got dressed up before going on the boat.

As I prepared to go parasailing, a mix of nerves and excitement filled me. I double-checked my harness and listened intently to the safety instructions.

Once on the boat, the adrenaline kicked in as we set off. The moment arrived – I was lifted into the sky, the world below shrinking away. The wind in my face, the vast expanse of blue ocean beneath me, and the stunning coastline in the distance took my breath away. I felt weightless, free, and alive, completely immersed in the moment. Parasailing was not just an activity; it was a soul-stirring experience that left me forever changed.

After the exhilarating parasailing adventure, we returned to the cozy lodge to unwind and rejuvenate. The sun-kissed glow on our skin and the memories of soaring high above the ocean lingered in our minds as we prepared for the evening ahead. Some of us took refreshing showers, while others lounged on the comfortable deck, savoring the peaceful moments after the adrenaline rush.
